Next up on our renovation agenda, after refinishing the terrazzo, was to remove all of the plaster cove moldings, frame the openings to the sunroom, hang new drywall, and plaster the walls and ceiling throughout the main living areas. The only problem was that we couldn’t get the work done right away. Fortunately, since the floors were done within a week of owning our home and we were able to paint most of the bedrooms, ceilings and closets included, we decided to move in to the house while we waited. When I say “move in”, I mean we opened our storage POD and dug out the our camping chairs, our mattress and the kids beds along with our clothing and personal items. We also had several huge plastic bins that held our kitchen spices, cooking oils and other pantry foods. (We didn’t want to store these things in a hot POD for a month so we lugged them along with us while we were living at my parents’ place.) Our living situation sort of resembled camping, if camping included a big screen TV on the floor and air conditioning. This little “camping trip” lasted about a week before our drywall/plaster/framing guy got to work. At this point, we had to cover up our sparkling new floors with paper and high tail it out of there. I don’t think we had any idea just how messy this part of the construction was going to be nor did we anticipate that a weekend-long project was going to turn into an 8-days-long project. My in-laws welcomed us in their home during this time so it turned out to be a relaxing week spent with family. Kind of unheard of at the time but a win-win nonetheless.
